Prince plays gig for Madonna at Paisley Park
A mere 60 people were permitted into Paisley Park last night to watch Prince put on a special show, performing three tracks from his latest album HITNRUN Phase One as well as Guitar and his new song Stare. But someone else turned up to watch, Madonna, who has just completed a two hour show at the Xcel Energy Center for her Rebel Heart tour.
After a short backstage chat, at 2:15am the two music icons returned to the dance floor where Prince took to his keyboards up on the stage to start off with Stare, then Guitar and followed by a cover of Bill Withers’ Use Me Up. These were followed by new songs Ain’t About To Stop, 1000 X’s and O’s and X’s Face. Ida Neilsen, Hannah and Joshua Welton watched on from the audience, while Donna Grantis joined Prince on stage with his old NPG stalwart Kirky Johnson on drums and newcomer Dwayne Thomas, Jr. on bass.
Madonna was sat on the edge of the stage and looked on adoringly, throughout. Prince finished the set with two encores, playing Free Urself and Sign O’ The Times, before her old pal headed off (approx 3am). It was a highly impromptu night for the small number of people able to get in; having only anticipated a DJ led dance party.
