As soon as you think you have seen it all, Prince pulls something out of the blue again. For a guy who apparently does not own a mobile phone, on 14 August he has just discovered his Twitter account! Well, it’s better late than never, but Prince himself has and taken to tweeting the @3rdeyegirl account. And what was amongst his first tweets – a close-up photo of an over-peppered plate of salad. Rock on, Prince! So will we be ‘tweeted’ to deep, 3rd Eye, and personal, with insights fresh from the horse’s mouth? Well, expect tidbits and teases from Prince fast and often. Or are we destined to just sift through reams of confusing and one-worded tweets? One thing for certain the timing is definitely gearing up toward the release of the new album Plectrum Electrum. But with a direct channel of communication to the Purple Yoda wide open now, a whole host of eager diehard Followers (which on this account leaped by 100,000 in one night) are doing all they can to sweet talk a retweet from the man himself and bask in their fleeting moment of purple magnificence.

Prince’s Twitter debut has been seen as so significant the event was splashed on every major news outlet on the web – which Prince later remarked (in a Tweet of course) that this must have meant it a “slow news day”. A new song Groovy Potential was added to 3rdEyeTunes.com to coincide with the event. Speaking of odd behaviour, just two days before his surprise 3rd Eye Girl concert at Amsterdam’s Paradiso club on 11 August, Prince was earlier seen during a fleeting visit to London on the 9th attending a King’s of Leon gig at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, apparently scoping out the venue for a possible future show of his own. Prince plays the Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon, Portugal on 17 August. Prince’s use of social media to promote his new album is certainly paying dividends, but will his Tweets be leaving the press something else to talk about instead?
