Prince had an on/off relationship with the Internet. Having been one of, if not the first major artist to embrace it as a medium to channel music directly to fans, Prince launched his pioneering NPG Music Club in 2001 – complete with an innovative and specially built integrated music player. Bridging the gap between Paisley Park Studios and his fans’ personal computers, Prince had thumbed his nose at the music industry middlemen, which at that time he vehemently distrusted.
Prince played close interest also in fan sites, and even maintained secret profiles on them to engage in discussion. Ironically, because of its proliferation of unauthorised music distribution, Prince fell out of love with the Internet in 2010 and shut down his online presence. He declared the internet ‘over’ and remained offline until 2013 with the launch of 3rdeyegirl.com.
